On Thanksgiving Day, the annual Macy’s Parade in New York City faced a brief but impactful disruption as 21 activists were arrested for protesting the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The demonstrators, advocating for Palestinian rights, leaped over barriers on West 55th Street and temporarily blocked the parade route, chanting “Free Palestine” and holding banners that read “Don’t celebrate genocide!” and “Arms embargo now.” They called for greater global awareness of the humanitarian crisis and urged the U.S. to cease arms supplies to Israel.
The protest, lasting around five minutes, halted the iconic procession, including the Ronald McDonald balloon. On thanksgiving, the NYPD swiftly intervened, arresting the protesters and clearing the path for the event to continue. While some spectators booed the interruption, others expressed support for the demonstrators’ message. The incident reflects a growing trend of public demonstrations related to the Gaza conflict, which has sparked widespread international concern since hostilities escalated in October 2023 following a Hamas attack on Israel.
This marks the second consecutive year that protesters have targeted the parade to raise awareness about the conflict. Last year, 34 protesters disrupted the event, with some gluing their hands to the street. As tensions in Gaza continue to draw global attention, activists aim to amplify their calls for justice and accountability through high-profile disruptions like this one.
