“We Cannot Let Aggression Win,” Says Macron as Europe Mulls Tougher Sanctions
European leaders gathered in Paris today to discuss escalating their support for Ukraine while increasing pressure on Russia through additional sanctions. French President Emmanuel Macron took a firm stance, stating, “We cannot let aggression win. Russia must face consequences for its actions.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed Macron’s sentiments and hinted at imposing stricter financial and trade restrictions. “Sanctions must bite harder,” he declared. The discussions centered around freezing more Russian assets, cutting off key trade dependencies, and restricting oil and gas revenues that fuel Moscow’s war efforts.
Germany and Poland backed the proposal, stressing the importance of unity. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz remarked, “If we show hesitation, we allow Putin to dictate terms. That cannot happen.”
However, some EU countries expressed concerns over economic repercussions, particularly in the energy sector. Still, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reassured the bloc, saying, “We will not falter. Our priority is Ukraine’s sovereignty.”
With tensions at an all-time high, the question remains: Will Europe strike Russia with its harshest sanctions yet? A final decision is expected by the end of the week.
