California Governor Gavin Newsom filed a $787 million defamation lawsuit against Fox News, marking one of the most significant legal challenges a sitting governor has ever launched against a media outlet. Newsom accused the network of airing a segment that, in his words, “twisted truth into fiction.”

The dispute centers on a televised clip where host Jesse Watters referenced a private call between Newsom and former President Donald Trump. According to Newsom, Fox News manipulated the segment to make it appear as though he asked Trump to send military troops into Los Angeles during recent protests.

Newsom did not hold back. “I never asked for troops. I asked for truth. And they gave me lies on live television,” he said at a press briefing.

The governor’s legal team demanded not only financial damages but also a full on-air retraction. “This lawsuit isn’t just about me,” Newsom stated. “It’s about every public figure who refuses to stay silent when facts get twisted.”

Fox News has not yet responded publicly. However, media experts believe this lawsuit could test the limits of defamation law in the age of viral misinformation.

Newsom promised to donate any damages to voter education campaigns and anti-disinformation groups. “If they want a fight,” he added, “they picked the right Californian.”
