Nasa is gearing up for its next big step in the Artmesis program, which aims to return humans to the moon and establish a long-term, presence there. After the success of Artemis II, which sent astronauts around the Moon, plans for Aertemsis III are moving ahead quickly. This mission will attempt to land astronauts on the lunar surface for the first time since 1972.
NASA plans to land near the Moon’s south pole, a region rich in water ice, to support future missions and long-term lunar exploration. The officials say that depends on the final preparations and testing of the space launch system rocket and the Orion space vehicle.
“This isn’t just about going to the Moon, it’s about staying there and learning how to live and work in space”, said a NASA spokesperson. The agency also hopes to use what it learns on the Moon to eventually send astronauts to Mars.
Stay tuned as NASA continues its journey to make space exploration history.
